The Fresco Finish
Arkeos Fresco
Finishes – Chaux Ferree, Badigeon,
Palatine, Galice, El Greco, Sandino, Sanrocco, etc… -
mark a revolutionary breakthrough in the fresco technique.
During the European Renaissance, frescos were cumbersome
things: thick, heavy, and built from layers of brick,
stone, straw and plaster.. To complete one often took
months, if not years. This is why they were used mainly
in palaces and places of worship.
Fresco Finishes,
on the other hand, are extremely light, only 1-2
mm thick, and
can be installed in a
matter of days. They combine the traditional virtues
of the traditional fresco – luster, durability,
depth and play of color with the very contemporary
virtues of speed, versatility, and ease of application.
The unique characteristic of some of these finishes
like Badigeon is a delayed curing time, allowing the
applicator to modify the finish for up to 24 hours,
depending on the degree of humidity in the air and
the porosity of the substrate. This allows him or her
to spread the texture seamlessly and effortlessly and
to allow each coat to fuse into each other, creating
new effects we could not dream of previously, like
mineral glazes and translucent colors. Once the delay
of 24 hours has passed, the finish will cure rapidly
and become as hard as concrete.
Chaux Ferre will give a beautiful and strong finish
in only one coat, after preparation, making it extremely
economical and spectacularly rapid. Please look up
for the characteristics of each product throughout
this site. |
Various effects can be introduced
by just changing the application methods of each product:
smooth, pitted
and semi-pitted for the Chaux Ferree, Sandino and Sanrocco;
cloudy, spotty and foggy for the Badigeon.
Since all the products can be
combined, it is easy to realize the amount of additional
effects these variations
can bring into the Fresco Finishes.

Since the inception of Arkeos, in
1989, the Fresco Finishes never stopped evolving. The
formulas of the various blends have been perfected and
new applications have been created every year.
The main decorative applications today are without
hesitation the multicolor and translucent effects and
they are really
unique to the Fresco Finishes. Others include sculptural
effects, various ways of inserting motifs and gradations,
applying metallic, iridescent and pearlescent finishes,
emulating various types of stone and associated effects,
finishing with patinas like wax, sealers and glazes,
embellishing furniture, etc,…
Another major characteristic
of most of the Fresco Finishes is that they can cover
any decorative elements of a room
no matter how intricate, like columns, mouldings,
cornices, curved walls and frames, thus matching
or complementing
the texture of walls and ceilings.
